Kenmore Washer Not Spinning

A washer that will not drain and a washer that will not spin are usually the same fault, because the machine refuses to spin until it has emptied. Here is what is blocking it and how to clear most of it yourself.

Common Causes

A blocked drain pump filter

The coin trap at the base of the machine catches lint, hair and hardware, and a restricted one stops the pump long before it stops the motor.

A kinked or raised drain hose

The hose has to rise and fall within a specific range; a crushed hose behind the machine produces exactly the same symptom as a failed pump.

A worn drain pump impeller

Pumps fail gradually rather than suddenly, so a machine that drains slowly today usually will not drain at all within a few weeks.

What You Can Check Yourself

Clear the drain pump filter — usually a small hatch at the bottom front, behind a cover
Check the drain hose behind the machine is not crushed, kinked or pushed too far into the standpipe

Common Questions About Washer Not Spinning

It drains but will not spin. Is that two faults?
Almost never. A machine that cannot empty fully refuses to spin as a protective measure, so a partial restriction — a filter, a kinked hose, a tiring pump — presents as a spin complaint. We check drainage first on every no-spin call.
Can I clear the filter myself?
Yes, and it is worth doing before you book. It is behind a small hatch at the bottom front. Put a shallow tray and a towel down first, because there is always more water in there than expected.
Is this worth repairing, or should I replace the unit?
It depends on the part, and on a mass-market unit that genuinely cuts both ways. A pump, a belt, a thermostat, a door switch — inexpensive, quick, clearly worth doing. A compressor or a sealed system in a ten-year-old machine can approach the price of a new one, and when it does we say so rather than quote the work. The diagnostic tells us which of the two you have.
Will you have the part, or is this a two-visit job?
Usually one visit. Volume brands share platforms and their parts are cheap, stocked and interchangeable across badges, which is the one clear advantage a mass-market machine has over a built-in at repair time.
How quickly can you get to me?
Most calls across Denver get a same-day or next-day slot with a real arrival window rather than an all-day wait. Foothills and mountain addresses sometimes need an extra day, particularly in winter — see where we work across Denver to check yours.
Is the repair guaranteed?
Every repair carries a written warranty of up to a year on the parts we fit and the labour we do. If the same fault returns inside that window we come back to it, and there is no second diagnostic fee for our own work.
